Day trip to Port Isaac in England……..

We hurried just a little thinking it might be farther than we could calculate on the map to Port Isaac where Doc Martin is filmed.  It’s about a distressed doctor that grew up  with no parental coaching to speak of (he was shipped off to a military school early on)  and is socially deficient  to the max!! To top it all off, at the site of blood , he throws up…..he is involved with the school teacher in town and they have a baby son…. We really like this show and all the characters and swore that if we ever got close, we would try to make it possible to see the town……Its shown on  public broadcasting  in series and this year maybe we would be lucky and they would have all the cast there but  we found out, they would be filming in 4 days,… crud!!!…….It was a 3 hour drive and a bad breakfast but finally we made our way into the town and found a place to park just outside  the city limits and right on the Coast……..here are some pics to see of the town…………

Bath Abbey in Bath England…….

Once again , after some snacks and refreshments, we made our way back down to the Abbey and stepped inside …….these cathedrals  are always fascinating  because its so hard to believe that the people of these ancient times could get this altogether so nicely and it still stands today. All the carvings and marble….and there is usually at least two or three in each town about the size of a medium city…..plus all the small chapels etc………This was connected to the Roman Baths along with a square for business and pleasure……..Here area some of the pics that I took that afternoon:

Today we tour the Roman Baths in Bath England…..exciting!!

This morning was just as I figured, sunny out and a bunch of cumulus clouds billowing up from the South East……we made a couple of  cups of coffee in our room and stepped outside to look for a quick breakfast with croissants  and an extra coffee,………just down the street about 4 blocks was the Roman Baths, plus the museum and the Bath Abbey…..not knowing what time it opened, we leisurely walked toward it and happened onto one of those wonderful looking bakeries so we picked up what we wanted and sat down for a few minutes to eat our goodies…….

A little history of Bath:

The Romans built  a temple here around 4th Century AD and also built the public baths which was a natural hot springs source.  It was dedicated to Sul, a Celtic God and Minerva, the goddess of healing. The town of Bath was called Aquae Sulis, the waters of Sul………

Here are some pics of the exhibit……….

After getting our car in London, we arrived in Bath, England….

The afternoon before,  we managed to make our way through the city (London) on the Tube (metro) and get to Heathrow Airport to pick up the car that I had reserved about 3 months prior to our vacation and little did I know, when we got there it would be a jumbled up mess and it was my fault……..When preparing to go , only two days  before, I didn’t want to have too many credit cards with me so I decided to leave this particular one behind and didn’t realize I needed it to rent this car and had forgotten i used that one at the time of reserving………………OR…………………  pay for the extra insurance , which we didn’t want to do………..to make a long story short, we ended up paying for the insurance , used a different card, I got charged twice for renting the car, which I didn’t even know about until we got home, then I was required to hash it out with the two company’s,….AND…………we had never driven before on the wrong side of the road!!!!!!! The first couple of hours were pretty hectic…..lol…..but we made it to Bath fine and found our hotel room in about an hour (they don’t put numbers on their buildings and they all look alike there……lol) . Around the block we go …..remember, stay on the left side….. no not here….go around the block again and  again and again………hey, there it is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want a beer!!!!!!!!

After settling in and finding a parking place (next door a grocery store parking lot underground) we found our British Pub to grab a cold one and relax………It was still pretty early (4pm ) for getting all that done and making it here alive so we toasted to a fun evening and did some people watching……..

Our favorite little spot for a pint and fish and chips....yea!

Toward evening, we walked down by the Roman Baths to find a place for dinner with a view…….Tomorrow, we decided we will go to the baths and tour the whole place……Its quite large and takes the better part of the day to see it all . So much history there and all through this town……Amazing! Very Roman here……..

Beginning vacation pics arriving in Paris, then onto Great Britain….

We had stayed the night before our flight about an hour from our home , in a new hotel that is close to the one at the airport we usually stay in because on the vacation before this one, our car was stolen from the parking lot,…………….(a park and ride hotel where u can drive to the hotel with your own car and leave it for however long you need to in the parking lot, for a nominal fee of course but is way cheaper than airport parking. You make out a slip saying when you arrived and when you will be back along with your license number and phone number…..no problem, right?…… There is an attendant that drives the lot a couple of times a day to check and see if your car is fine………well, that’s all fine and dandy  if your car is there but if it isn’t they ASSUME that you came in early and left…. they don’t call you to make  sure that you came back early…… In that case we were going to be gone for about 3 weeks……… The police think it was either that same night or the next when it was stolen…….so onto the airport we went the next morning for our flight and we didn’t really check too much that morning)……..when we arrived back after 3 weeks, NO CAR!!!!  so it was out who knows  where all that time and they found it in a bunch of trees about 25 miles from the hotel……one good thing is, they didn’t wreck it or demolish the inside, just stole the rims and tires, tach and left it sitting on the ground until the tow truck came and put it in a yard….it cost about $2000. grand or more to get it back and running…I’m still fueding about that!!)……………….

We wanted be close to the airport just in case traffic decided to get hectic and wouldn’t be able to get there in time. Anyway , this time we took the shuttle up instead of our car….We don’t like to take the shuttle because when a person gets home from a trip,  you don’t want to wait around for transportation, you just want to get home NOW!…but with all that going on the last time, we can’t trust doing that again.

Ok , enough about that! Excited to get to Paris, we checked the guide books some and went across the street for some supper and some good microbrew before turning in for the night, not having to worry about our vehicle in the slightest…………Goodnight!

Arriving in Paris about 6am,(overnight flight) we managed to get the RER Train into Paris and had a pretty good idea where the nearest metro station was to our hotel, we studied the map over and over and finally found it tucked away alongside a blvd park……12pm……..nice but anyone that has stayed in these hotels know your not getting out in case of a fire…..ugah, no way……forget about it , it probably won’t happen, lol……a quick nap and we were ready for some good food , wine and people watching…….this would be only one night in Paris, bullet train to London at 8:40am (was much cheaper to fly to Paris for the taxes $50.00 both,–instead of $250.00 each into London  (carbon tax) besides we wanted to take the bullet train just for fun…only about 2.5 hours, no big deal………….here is some of the views from a sidewalk cafe’ we picked………..By the way, we had been to Paris before so that’s why we are taking the train out so soon and don’t feel like we need to stay , after all our vacation is meant to be in Great Britain and Ireland……..London here we come!!!!
