Sleeping on the boat…………

Saturday night:

All day after several monotonous tasks at the house , it was time to  drive up the lake and stay in the boat where absolute solitude occurs. A small stereo, cooler, etc. and your set for the nite. I brought my 4 cup coffee maker along and water for morning.  I need not be home until about noon so tonight I will be able to compute, search, rest, and think about upcoming events before winter…………….our favorite , crabbing will start on the 10th of Sept.! at the Coast. Oct. need to see some revenue so back to work and keep going for a couple of months. Then Holidays and out goes the year………………

The moon was shining brightly around midnight across the water and all was well…. goodnight……

In the morning, I peaked out from the hatch and a slight breeze was starting from the West and was still only 9:30am…..

.would probably be good sailing today but I have no crew until Daddy-o gets back and he’ll be tired and  worn out. He’ll be home around noon and so will I. Will be nice to get back together after a week ……… I want to let him get rested up before we do anything in the way of work or fun………. He  deserves it……..they did a complete plumbing remodel in 9 days all the way to the street and started to put back bathroom and laundry room and kitchen. Our son and  daughter in-law are so thankful for his help . We are glad to lend a hand, then its done right  and don’t have to worry about repairing later!

I made my coffee and straightened up the cabin and quietly  slipped the padlock on the door and  started for home, refreshed and ready for that house painting job coming up fast………………

   Happy Trails!!

harvest time

While passing by the 3 hop plants that are trailing off the back of the house and side of house, I determined that , yes, I think the time is right for picking. The cones or flowers as some people call them, have become slightly crunchy with some browning of the leaves right at the tips. For about a week now , I have kept a close watch on these vines that crept up and over the roof in an always clockwise circle clinging onto the hairy rope that we assembled this spring along with new poles galvanized to 12′. A couple of lines on each side for support. Waiting for the right time to harvest.  I thought as the summer went on that , no ,I wouldn’t have a very good crop this year and figured the soil wasn;t as rich as should be but once on the ladder i discovered that I could fill 2 grocery bags with just the one variety, which is a good one for German styles of  brews.  The other one, Zues, has a plentiful bounty also and has cones that are a rightous 1 1/2 inches long! Thats a big cone…….Also 1 full plastic grocery bag came off of that one plant, Outstanding! My other plant in the back yard will yield about 1/2 bag so I will have to buy extra for my batches of beer that require those hops but they are not expensive to speak of. I just enjoy watching those vines take ahold in the spring and start their clockwise journey straight UP!
When checking, I pick one cone and tear in half and rub together and take a whiff to see if the matured flavor is at its peak. Then make sure the cone leaves are spread out and slightly dry.Grab the ladder and gather all from the plant, then spread out on drying racks and vacumn pack, freeze and weigh for the receipe amount. Presto! flavoring and bittering cooks in the wort as you make the brew.

   Happy Trails!!

Sunday morning deep in the woods with  Bluegrass music blaring in the background while Daddy-o is fixing raw fried potatoes with onions and peppered bacon crisp and brown with heavenly smell coming out from the huge fire ring as most of the other campers are breaking camp to go home and we’ll have it all to ourselves for the rest of the day………… Last two days have been in the 90’s and no wind so sailing is put on hold until maybe later in the afternoon……..come on wind! Up here there is always a west wind in the afternoon but Friday brought an East wind that was fierce. We enjoyed it and then  lowered the sails and  tied up. A cool homebrew in the boat and then a quick dip in the pretty clear water and we were set for the evening and a short walk to burn off excess calories……….
We have little power so I’ll keep it short today…………8-5-2012-1

Happy Trails!!
